The Most Popular Procedures in the West

The Most Popular Procedures in the West

Though the American Society of Plastic Surgeons releases its annual cosmetic trends survey results early each year, the organization continues to comb through the data to present more detailed information in the months that follow. More recently, the ASPS published a series of more focused demographic details, revealing how procedures break down by age group, gender, and geographic region. This provides a look at the most popular procedures in the Mountain and Pacific regions, which includes the San Francisco Bay Area. Facelifts are fifth on the list for the Western states, with 39,557 of the surgeries reported. Rhinoplasties are in fourth (59,010), blepharoplasties are in third (71,137), liposuction procedures are in second (77,308), and breast augmentations are in first (108,161).

Dubbed “Region 5,” the geographic area is the largest in the ASPS survey, comprised of California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado.

All told, this region—which includes the major cultural hubs of both San Francisco and Los Angeles, as well as San Diego, Seattle, Phoenix, and Denver—accounted for 30 percent of all cosmetic surgeries performed in the United States in 2017. The next highest region (New England and the Middle Atlantic) was at 19 percent.

On the nonsurgical side, Botulinum toxin type A topped the list in the West (and everywhere else). This is the category of injectables that includes BOTOX®, which was administered more than 2 million times in California and its neighbors in 2017. Next on the list for the region was soft-tissue fillers, such as Juvederm and fat transfer (774,005), and then chemical peels (440,873).
