Dr. Stanley Jacobs’ Facetime Blog recently explored the surgical side of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons annual survey, noting the overall popularity of breast augmentation in 2017.
The survey also explored nonsurgical treatments, which came in at even greater numbers when compared to surgical options.
In first place, as usual, was botulinum toxin type A, an injectable formula derived from bacteria that impact muscles by keeping them from contracting properly. With 7.23 million treatments tabulated, this is most commonly applied as Botulinum-based wrinkle-reducing injections, a Sonoma County-area staple that’s FDA approved to smooth out horizontal forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet. It also has a range of other common applications considered “off label.”
Following botulinum toxin type A, with 2.69 million treatments reported, were soft-tissue fillers, which include a range of other injectables designed to replace volume lost as facial fat and collagen diminish with age.
Chemical peels racked up 1.37 million procedures of their own. These treatments are designed to make the outermost layers of skin flake off to reveal younger, fresher, smoother, more even skin beneath.
Also high on the list, with 740,287 treatments, was microdermabrasion, which involves gently polishing away dead skin for results similar to a peel.
Some of these nonsurgical options can be combined with surgical solutions to great effect at The Jacobs Center for Cosmetic Surgery. In particular, Dr. Jacobs has developed the SynergyLift™ to deliver the best of what facelift and chemical peels have to offer. For more information, call his office in Healdsburg at (707) 473-0220.
