On Jan. 11, 2019, Dr. Stanley Jacobs introduced scores of Bay area high school students to the world of surgery—a possible career path—at the Mi Futuro Youth Healthcare Symposium, held at Sonoma State University. This daylong event, the fourth annual, brought more than 400 students from 22 high schools together to learn from local professionals about work in the healthcare industry. Information included what various jobs entail, as well as the education required to achieve them.
This year’s theme was “Compassion and Profession.” Open to anyone aged 16 to 30 considering a career in healthcare, the event primarily targeted Latino youth. Presenters came from the fields of mental and primary health.
Dr. Jacobs led an interactive med station focused on surgery, offering hands-on experiences—including his unique facial life masks—to introduce the specialty to attendees. Other stations included anesthesiology, lab and pathology, surgical nursing, resuscitation, and operating room. The event also included speakers, workshops, and a range of presenters and exhibitors from the worlds of education, healthcare institutions, social services, nonprofits, and behavioral health.
Mi Futuro’s mission is to promote mental wellness in young people, inspire them to pursue careers in the healthcare industry, and advocate for higher education as a component of total health.
One mother wrote: “My son [T.A.] from Credo High attended your event. He was the only freshman to go from his school. He has expressed an interest in becoming a Dr. and had a lot of curiosities. Your event was undoubtedly an eye opener, and he truly enjoyed and absorbs so many interesting ideas and concepts. He was inspired by the plastic surgeon he got to speak with, and I am full of gratitude for this Dr. to have taken the time to talk to and answer my son’s questions. He gave him food for thought.”
